The return of victims of human trafficking takes place through Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) programme. The Swedish Migration Agency is responsible for the programme, and it is implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) office in Finland.

Prior to the return, the Swedish social services or regional coordinators conduct a risk assessment in collaboration with IOM Finland and IOM in the country of destination/origin. The assessment includes threat assessment for victim in Sweden and the country of origin, to determine where and under what conditions the victim can return.

Children

A child who has been separated from their family must only be returned to their country of origin if the relevant authorities in Sweden and the home country assess that this is in the child’s best interest.

Social services in Sweden take care of the child until the authorities in the home country have assumed responsibility for ensuring that the child has the proper protection and support.
