A Roadmap for National Implementation.

Our new policy brief explores the practical challenges that can make restoration difficult to deliver and identifies ways to make implementation more effective. Developed by the Baltic Sea Region Youth Forum Working Group on Environment & Climate Change, the policy brief draws on insights from practitioners and organisations working with nature restoration across the region. It highlights key issues around policy coherence, administrative processes, funding, knowledge sharing, and adaptive management.

The EU Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR) marks an important step towards reversing ecosystem degradation across Europe. With Member States submitting national restoration plans and moving towards implementation, attention now needs to turn to how restoration can work effectively in practice.

The brief puts forward eight key recommendations for creating the conditions needed for successful restoration. These include improving policy coherence, streamlining permitting and funding processes, strengthening capacity, making better use of knowledge and monitoring, and ensuring that restoration can adapt to changing environmental conditions, including climate change.

The policy brief builds on the Steps for Nature podcast mini-series, which brought together voices from across the Baltic Sea region to discuss practical experiences of nature restoration. Together, the podcast and policy brief bring practical experiences from the region into the conversation on how restoration can be better supported and implemented.

Read the full
policy brief

Further resources:

EU Nature Restoration Regulation
Steps for Nature podcast

Our new policy brief explores the practical challenges that can make restoration difficult to deliver and identifies ways to make implementation more effective.
