Welcome back to the seventh episode of Steps for Nature! This week, we speak with Viliina and Santtu from Metsähallitus about large-scale ecosystem restoration through the Priodiversity LIFE project. The discussion reflects on the complexity of coordinating restoration work across ecosystems and stakeholders, the value of long-term environmental research, and how to bring people along in restoration processes.

Metsähallitus is a Finnish state-owned enterprise that provides environmental services while balancing the sustainable use of natural resources with broader environmental and social responsibilities. Within Metsähallitus, Parks & Wildlife Finland manages state-owned lands and waters across Finland and oversees services related to nature conservation, cultural heritage, outdoor recreation, and fishing and hunting permits.

“I think that a key for that Priodiversity project is that we have such an amazing group of people involved; such highly dedicated experts that are so motivated that their passion shows through their work. […] Also, it is such a privilege to do this job because you can see all the things that are already happening. Even in our project alone, so many great things are happening every week that it really keeps you motivated.” – Viliina Evokari

The Priodiversity LIFE project is Finland’s largest initiative aimed at halting biodiversity loss. Running from 2024 to 2031, it brings together a wide range of actors and comprises more than 60 measures, ranging from grassroots restoration work to data management and improved policy coherence. Through regional biodiversity action plans, the project identifies key biodiversity hotspots and works to improve their condition by restoring forests, mires, water bodies, bird wetlands, and heritage landscapes. Alongside practical restoration work, the project focuses on collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and encouraging broader societal involvement in nature conservation.
