Long-term assistance and residence permits

Long-term residence and permits

Victims of human trafficking an option to regularise their residence for long-term purposes by applying asylum in Iceland. Human trafficking constitutes grounds to grant an asylum.

Additionally, the Directorate of Labour can grant a temporary work permit to presumed victims of THB who have a residence permit in Iceland.

Long-term assistance

Iceland does not have specific long-term or formal integration programmes for victims of human trafficking. The human trafficking team at Bjarkarhlíð evaluates the needs of victims on a case-by-case basis. Female victims, who are accommodated in the women’s shelter receive assistance and support for the duration of their stay. In most cases, victims either try to find employment in Iceland or seek assistance to leave the country.
