Final recommendations from the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Youth Forum 2022

The Baltic Sea Parliamentary Youth Forum event was held in hybrid format on 11-12 June at the CBSS Secretariat with invited youth participants – representing all 10 member states of the CBSS. Four roundtable discussions were organised on different topics: Forest, wetlands and biodiversity; Innovation; Resilient cities; and Sea and coastline resilience.

The Baltic Sea Parliamentary Youth Forum was organised as a back-to-back event by the Swedish delegation to the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC), the Council of the Baltic Sea States / Baltic Sea Youth Platform, and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden to promote dialogue between young people of the region and policymakers.

Youth representatives from all 10 member states of the CBSS met in hybrid format on 11-12 June to draft recommendations based on four roundtable discussions:

  1. Forest, wetlands and biodiversity;
  2. Innovation;
  3. Resilient cities;
  4. Sea and coastline resilience.

The recommendations were finalised and agreed upon by 16 youth representatives present at the CBSS Secretariat in Stockholm. In all, the forum decided on eight recommendations addressed to the BSPC Working Group on Climate Change and Biodiversity. The recommendations were presented to the members of the parliament on 13 June at the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC) in Stockholm. During the forum, several MPs and other high-level speakers, such as Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, reconfirmed their interest to strengthen youth participation in the region and to create a sustainable forum for youth organisations and individuals to meet. The German presidency of the BSPC announced that the youth forum will be organised for the third consecutive time during the BSPC annual conference in 2023.

The Working Group on Climate Change and Biodiversity (BSPC) invited the Youth Forum to participate in their Summit on 28 August in Schwerin, Germany and ascertained that they would keep the Youth Forum updated on how the work with the recommendations in the BSPC is going.
