CBSS Summer University 2025

Join us this September in Greifswald to engage with the past, present, and future of resilient identities in the Baltic Sea Region. Call for applications to participate in the CBSS Summer University 2025 is now open.

The Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Baltic Sea Region Research (IFZO) invite applications for the CBSS Summer University 2025, hosted in the historic Baltic city of Greifswald, Germany. This year’s programme, “Resilient Identities in the Baltic Sea Region: Balticness in Transition,”addresses how regional identity and cultural narratives can foster resilience in times of political, environmental, and societal transformation.

When: 15–20 September 2025 (arrival on the 14th of September, departure on the 21st of September)

How many credits: 5 ECTS 

What to Expect

Over six dynamic days, students will engage with the evolving concept of Balticness through an interdisciplinary lens. The programme includes:

  • Lectures by leading scholars and practitioners
  • Interactive workshops and group discussions
  • Excursions and site visits in and around Greifswald

Together, participants will examine how identity, culture, and collective memory contribute to the region’s resilience in the face of challenges like the war in Ukraine, climate change, democratic backsliding, and disinformation.

Who can apply?
  • University and PhD students in the humanities or social sciences
  • Advanced high school students with a strong interest in the Baltic Sea Region

  • Include a statement of intent (2,000–3,000 characters) describing your interest and motivation. Provide your university affiliation, programme, and year of study.
  • Number of participants: 20. 
  • Deadline for applications: 18 May 2025. (Applicants needing visas are encouraged to apply early)
Practical Info:
  • No registration or tuition fees
  • Daily lunches and one group dinner included
  • Free shared accommodation for non-local participants (please indicate need in your application)
  • Travel costs covered up to €300 (more may be available in exceptional cases)

The CBSS Summer University is jointly organised by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Baltic Sea Region Research (IFZO) at the University of Greifswald, University of Gdańsk, Centre for Landscape and Culture at Tallinn University, Zatoka Foundation, and the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS), in cooperation with other Young People Network for Balticness (YoPeNET) project partners.
