CBSS Summer University 2026 in Knivsberg

From 2–8 August 2026, the CBSS Summer University 2026 will bring together students and young researchers at the Knivsberg Educational Centre in Denmark for an interdisciplinary programme exploring the theme “Minorities and societal resilience around the Baltic.”

The second edition of the CBSS Summer University 2026 will examine the evolving relationship between national majorities and minorities across the Baltic Sea Region. Once marked by mistrust and conflict, minority issues have become an important part of reconciliation, democratic development, and regional cooperation in Europe. Against this backdrop, the programme will introduce participants to key questions of coexistence, conflict transformation, and societal resilience, with a particular focus on the Danish–German border region, the Baltic States, and the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland.

Hosted in the unique setting of the Danish–German border region, the Summer University will use the area as a living laboratory to explore how changing borders and cross-border cooperation have shaped reconciliation and strengthened regional ties. Through lectures, discussions, and practical activities, participants will engage with leading academics and experts while examining historical, cultural, and political perspectives on multi-ethnic societies.

A central feature of the programme is collaborative group work, during which participants will produce podcasts exploring narratives of identity, history, and coexistence. This hands-on approach encourages creative thinking while strengthening communication, analytical, and teamwork skills.

The CBSS Summer University offers an inspiring environment for interdisciplinary learning, intercultural exchange, and dialogue on some of the most pressing societal challenges facing the Baltic Sea Region today.
