CBSS Maritime Experts Meet on Conventional and Chemical Weapons in the Baltic Sea
CBSS maritime experts address the cross-border security, environmental and economic risks posed by unexploded ordnance in the Baltic Sea.
Maritime experts from CBSS Member States convened online on 9 December 2025 to examine the persistent challenge posed by unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the Baltic Sea, including its implications for regional safety, environmental protection and economic activity.
Discussions underscored the scale and complexity of submerged munitions, drawing on national, regional and European experience in assessment, risk management and mitigation. Participants shared national perspectives and practical insights, highlighting the importance of cross-border learning and coordinated approaches to a challenge that transcends national waters.
Work on UXO will continue in March 2026, when regional projects, experts and policymakers are expected to advance dialogue on the security, economic and environmental dimensions of submerged munitions through joint project meetings, a HELCOM expert group session and a dedicated seminar for policy stakeholders.
The meeting in December marked the first gathering of the CBSS Expert Group on Sustainable Maritime Economy (EGSME) under the Polish CBSS Presidency.
EGSME brings together national experts from CBSS Member States, the European Commission and pan-Baltic stakeholders to coordinate and exchange knowledge on sustainable maritime economic development and marine ecosystem protection.
