Child Participation in DDR at the Centre of the Secure Kids Project’s Workshop in Stockholm

The Secure Kids project, focusing on child participation in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), brought together national experts from across the Baltic Sea Region on 6-7 February 2024 in Stockholm to address the topic of child participation in Disaster Risk Reduction.

National experts from the fields of child participation and civil protection in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland gathered at the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) in Stockholm for a two-day workshop as part of the Secure Kids project led by the CBSS and funded by the European Union. The workshop centred on child participation in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in the Baltic Sea Region. The collaborative session, organised by the CBSS Civil Security and Children At Risk Units, aimed to develop a child participation mechanism for authorities in the field of DRR.

Throughout the workshop, experts engaged in comprehensive discussions on the current status of child participation in DRR in their respective countries. The conversation revolved around identifying areas for improvement and building the capacity of authorities to ensure effective child involvement. It also explored different aspects that enable child participation in the prevention and preparedness stages of DRR. The commitment to ongoing collaboration was evident, with experts pledging to train as trainers, contributing to the dissemination and application of the mechanism to be created.

As a highlight, participants had the privilege of learning about “Fryshuset – Vi behövs,” a Swedish initiative showcasing youth participation in disaster and crisis discussions.

The CBSS-led Secure Kids project aims to enhance the sustainability and impact of child participation mechanisms in disaster risk reduction activities and decision-making processes, contributing to the development of resilient societies.
