Estonian CBSS Presidency Releases Baseline Report on Marine Digital Twins and Green Shipping Corridors
The Estonian CBSS Presidency has published a new report outlining the Baltic Sea Region’s progress and prospects in developing marine digital twins and green shipping corridors.
The Estonian Presidency of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) has published a Baseline Report on Marine Digital Twins and Green Shipping Corridors in the Baltic Sea Region, offering an overview of emerging trends, ongoing initiatives, and future directions in maritime digitalisation and decarbonisation.
The report, compiled by Estonia’s Ministry of Climate, reflects key Presidency priorities and builds on previous CBSS efforts to advance a sustainable and prosperous Baltic Sea Region (BSR). It reviews the current landscape of green shipping corridors and marine digital twins, highlighting the potential of coordinated regional action to strengthen innovation, reduce emissions, and improve maritime resilience.
Among the key findings:
- The BSR is well-positioned to become a frontrunner among Europe’s six sea basins in the development of marine digital twins and green shipping corridors.
- Future steps for a Baltic Sea digital twin include building a network of existing national data systems, enhancing access to marine data, and fostering public–private collaboration to reduce data fragmentation and duplication.
- While interest in green shipping corridors is growing, approaches vary widely. Further work is needed to harmonise definitions, assess outcomes, and explore the potential of regional working groups to align strategies and develop action plans.
The publication builds on work initiated during the German and Finnish CBSS Presidencies and was further developed under Estonia’s leadership of the CBSS Expert Group on Sustainable Maritime Economy (EGSME). It supports the long-term CBSS objective of fostering a decarbonised, resilient, and competitive maritime sector in the region.
